Ice Conditions Report 3-8-26

This past weekend saw a mix of weather in the U.P. from sunny and warm, to windy and cold. We also experiences a bit of snow and a bit of rain! While the seeps in the park remain really good many of the true water falls are opening up and becoming unclimbable. With the approaching spring weather it is highly recommended to bring a hardshell in your kit as many of these climbs are wet!

It was nice to see many climbers coming up and getting some spring swings in on the area classics. Opening Curtains, Prelude Curtain, Boomer Falls, The Curtains, The Dryer Hose, The School Room, Big Pine Pillar, Lake Shore Curtains Toatally Todd, April Ice, Timeless Art of Sudection, and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly all saw some action. Climbs such as Sweet Mother Moses, Sand Point Falls, and Giddy Up were all too wet or had developed holes making them unclimbable.

Earlier in the week, local climbers did make another pilgrimage out to Grand Island, specifically to Trout Bay. The Lake is is holding for now but obviously can change from day to day so if you are looking to make a late season trip to the island be sure to check with locals or the sherrif department before venturing out on the lake ice.

The extended forcast looks pretty good for next week and heading into next weekend with overnight lows still below freezing. Should be great spring conditions with hero ice for those who are still stoked on getting out. Depending on what your plans may be, if you are looking to get further into the back country please keep in mind the trail is becoming “punchy” and post holeing is a real possibility adding a bit of time to your approach.

Weather and ice conditions can change hourly and what may appear to be “good conditions” to one climber may not be so to another. Please remember that just because a conditions report says that a particular climb is “in”, each individual is ultimately responsible for making his/her own climbing decisions.
