Ice Conditions Report 1-8-24

HMR Saturday PC Tyler Davis

What a strange winter this has been. After one of the slowest starts to the season that we can remember, we are finally getting cold temperatures and some ice formations to climb! How strange of a start to our season? While the front country climbs have not fully formed yet, the back country is starting to fill in! Several backcountry climbs have formed and saw ascents this weekend including the ultra classic HMR. Here are a few shots from over the weekend.

With a low snow pack this year, driving to the trail heads have shaved off considerable approach times to the back country climbs. This may change next week as we do have some snow on the way next week. Itching to get after some back country climbs? This may be a good opportunity!

Jus a reminder that Front Country climbs have not fully formed yet (the exception might be Prelude Curtain and Boomer Falls). It will take a bit more cold weather, which looks like we will get this week, to get on them or any of the classic Munising pillars.

Please be mind full that Munising early season formations are extremely delicate and knocking any pillars down at this point may take a month to reform. BEFORE MAKING THE LONG DRIVE UP– please call Down Wind Sports for up to the minute conditions: 906-387-8020

Weather and ice conditions can change hourly and what may appear to be “good conditions” to one climber may not be so to another. Please remember that just because a conditions report says that a particular climb is “in”, each individual is ultimately responsible for making his/her own climbing decisions
