Ice Conditions Report 1-15-24

Finally- an ice conditions report we can all get behind! This holiday weekend saw the U.P. get back to normal winter conditions with widespread snowfall and sub zero temperatures – helping to form up some of our most beloved routes! Want some more good news? The long range forecast leading up to the festival looks amazing, mostly cold temperatures for the foreseeable future!

There were several groups un for the extended weekend search out the climbable ice. The backcountry is still the place to be as climbs like Miners Falls, Bridalveil, Potatoe Patch Falls, The Rim and Rappin Ice are all climbable. As of today folks were still able to drive back on the road but that could change any day.

During this strange season, the Front Country has lagged behind the backcountry as far as having climbable ice but that is changing fast. Lakeshore Curtains, Totally Todd, Intersection Falls, Left side of the Curtains, and Prelude Curtain are in. Some more of your favorites are jsut a few days away!

Please be mind full that Munising early season formations are extremely delicate and knocking any pillars down at this point may take a month to reform. BEFORE MAKING THE LONG DRIVE UP– please call Down Wind Sports for up to the minute conditions: 906-387-8020

Weather and ice conditions can change hourly and what may appear to be “good conditions” to one climber may not be so to another. Please remember that just because a conditions report says that a particular climb is “in”, each individual is ultimately responsible for making his/her own climbing decisions
