Ice Conditions Report 1-3-21

Happy New Year!  It sure was nice seeing some familiar faces running around Pictured Rocks looking to get some fresh sticks in this past weekend! From Sand Point to HMR folks were getting after it.  We are still experiencing warmer than normal temperatures and that seems to be the case for this upcoming week.

Michigan Ice Fest Guides David Hixenbaugh, Nic Dobbs, Emily Gantner and Erik Olsen headed out to HMR to get most likely the first lead of the season.  Congratulations to David as he scored this noble lead over a remarkably calm Lake Superior.

The team also took advantage of the low snow fall of the season and drove the road to the trail head parking lot cutting off some dreaded approach time.

PC Emily Gantner

For those that have climbed HMR before you can see that the formation is more quite a bit more narrow than usual and a bit thin for January.

Bridal Veil Falls 1-1-21  PC Captain Scott Gnas

The Rim 1-1-21  PC Captain Scott Gnas

Captain Scott Gnas was back in town with the Sea Dragon 3 and took a ride out to Grand Island and sent some beta on the climbs along the West Shore.  We really need to start getting some colder weather to freeze the lake ice so that we can get out and get after some of these climbs (or we need to buy a boat!)
